Face to Face
In thousands of factories across the world faceless men and women
work hard to create the myriad of products that
we consume everyday, mostly thoughtlessly.
In this section I want to introduce you, one person per month, to the
real people making our work. You will find that they are us and we are them:
our hopes and fears are largely the same, even if we exist in different
economies. Craft work is still under-valued although it has a wide audience.
To me, hand made products have soul, feeling and the capacity to
give much more than you'd expect.
Think about it:: a real person sat there and embroidered your babushka, bag or bedspread.
You and I are linked through the work of others and we all share in the enjoyment of
a beautifully crafted piece of work.

JULY 2008
Face to Face with:
Lalita Shahi
![]() This is the lovely Lalita. She is 21 years old
and told me she loves to sleep in her spare time!
She also likes to travel around the country side,
enjoying new places.
Lalita has a good attitude to life and to work:
"If we want a good life and a good future, we need to work hard.
If there are problems, at work or at home, we shouldn't give up,
we need to keep going."
JUNE 2008
Face to Face with:
Anju Shakya
![]() This absolutely gorgeous girl is Anju Shakya.
She is 24 years old, loves playing badminton,
volleyball, reading novels, watching movies and
spending time with friends.
Anju really enjoyed her time at college, although
studying wasn't always easy she had many friends
and enjoyed college life to the fullest.
Now, a working girl, she finds that life is a bit
of a struggle at times, she worries about planning her
future, she worries if she will be able to find a good husband
with whom to have one boy and one girl!
Anju likes the intimicy of a small family as she feels it
is easier to understand each other when there are not too many
different people in one space.
She lives with her parents, one brother, two
sisters and one grandmother.
Renske's comment:
When I started the interviews I found the girls where not used to
answering my kind of questions: what do you want for yourself
in life, what is important to you? It is a testament to their
unstinting generosity that they tried to answer my invasive
questions as honestly as they could.
